Fun Halloween Activities Toddlers And Preschoolers Enjoy

Happy Autumn! Time is zooming by! As I write this, we are more than half way through October and our church is already gearing up for a Harvest Fest complete with yummy candy,  fun carnival games, cool characters, and more! There will be fun halloween activities toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy there as well as in my home with Grand-toddler, though he will probably also attend our church fest – maybe even grand-baby. Depending on the other known constant of autumn – since colds and flu germs abound! We shall see. 🙂

Regardless, they are bound to see a monster or two when they go trick or treating as well as when monsters come a’calling. For that matter, just driving down their street may give them a view of fun and sometimes scary things since not everyone decorates with harvest and cute decor for Halloween. Seems like a terrific time to talk about God’s GRAND protection, don’t you think?

Of course, monsters aren’t the only things that are scary!  Last week, we had a rainstorm complete with LOUD cracks of thunder. The next day, Little Bear came over and was telling me all about the scary noise he heard! So I taught him my two favorite songs for any kind of scary moment. These are songs my grandkids have loved for years and their parents enjoyed before them. And would you believe it! I sing these songs to myself when I’m a bit afraid. What are they,” you ask. You’ll find them further down this post. Suffice it to say, one of the songs mentions monsters. And I realized, Little Bear may not know what a monster is, though he probably does – kind of – thanks to the magic of Elmo and Cookie Monster. So it will be fun to do some easy crafts centered around happy monsters to hopefully help forestall any scary monsters.

Thanks to Children’s Ministry Resources, I even have a cute monster coloring page for grand-toddler. Definitely great for fun Halloween activities toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy! If you hurry, you can get it for free as well, along with other cute autumn activity pages. Just click here.  (But remember, prices change constantly, so be sure it is still listed as free. And if that has changed, poke around and find out what IS free now.) That being said, do poke around as they always have great goodies to purchase AND for free. It’s truly a blessing to many!

Bible Memory Verses Toddlers Preschoolers

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9 (NIV 1984)

Yes, that is a bit long for toddlers. And if you prefer a smaller version, you could go with

The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go!

But the whole verse is in a song I’m already singing to him and will be singing to him for years to come so I know he will learn it easily.  Here is our Bible verse picture.

UNscary Discussion About Scary Things

Little Bear and I talked about things that might seem scary. Like the thunder from last week, monsters on people’s porches, loud dogs, lions like he saw at the zoo, etc. We sang our song about trusting God (See below) and I reminded him that it must have been scary for Noah when he was building his ark and filling it with animals. Since grand-toddler is going through one of “those” toddler stages and is TOTALLY fixated on Noah, ALL our discussions include Noah but now we can branch out a bit too. 🙂

Bible Stories For Toddlers and Preschoolers

So today we branched out to Daniel and the Lions Den. We read the story together from three of his Bible story books including “Daniel Prays,” from The Rhyme Bible Storybook for Toddlers, “Daniel” from The Candle Bible for Toddlers, and “Daniel and the Lions” from The Rhyme Bible Storybook.  And with Daniel, I talked about how much he loved God, trusted God and obeyed God no matter what. And that’s what we should always do as well!

As you can probably guess, I checked with Amazon and WOOHOO – they have a copy of “God is Bigger Thank the Boogie Man” book by VeggieTales, complete with a button to play the song. Naturally I ordered that right away and, thanks to my Prime Membership, it arrived in plenty of time for our projects!

I have to add a caveat to this though. While the video of this show didn’t bother Little Bear, I opted to NOT read the book to him this year as it did seem to focus a LOT more than I wanted on the scary side of things. So he just had fun poking the button and playing the song. Probably next year or the year after, we’ll have fun reading the book too. 🙂

When thinking about fun Halloween activities toddlers and preschoolers can enjoy, I decided a fun “picture” lunch would bring a smile or two. I made this curly headed man for Little Bear – a cute lunch plate. Later I realized I could have surrounded the face with the macaroni to make a lion’s mane. That would have been even better! Happily, he didn’t mind and enjoyed lunch throughly.

Click here for a coloring page for Daniel and the lions den – isn’t it great that it shows him as an older man which is Biblically accurate. So many books and coloring pages show him as a child. For more fun facts about Daniel, click here for a fun quiz from David Jeremiah for older kids. 🙂

Coffee Liners make great lion pictures for fun autumn activities preschoolers toddlers enjoy

I spotted several cute craft ideas using coffee filters and cupcake holders to make lions of all types. For 2 year old Grand-toddler, we went uber simple and just colored the liner and used fun googley eyed lions in the middle which he quite enjoyed.

Fun Fall Play-doh activities for toddlers preschoolers

Check out these cute  playdough monsters with spagetti noodles. I really liked them, but Little Bear decided he just wanted to roll our play-doh back and forth and then stack the play-doh tools. That was fun too! 🙂

We took a cute medium pumpkin and he decorated it as a “monster” with the help of Jack-O-Lantern stickers I bought. He really enjoyed that project – especially when he realized he could take them back off the pumpkin and redo them elsewhere. He re-made the face about three different times. Very fun! And a great opportunity to review our earlier verse about letting our Light Shine for God.

Little Bear also enjoyed a Monster coloring book I made using the cute monster clip art by ClipartLand. The main page is our Bible memory page above. Then I turned each monster into a coloring page with the numbers and added a page with my monsterific take on an old children’s rhyme. It was quite enjoyable to read it, practice counting, and watch him jumping up and down with the five little monsters. 🙂

Five Little Monsters

Five little monsters jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
The MOMster called the Doctor and the Doctor said,
“No more monsters jumping on the bed!”

FOUR little monsters jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
The MOMster called the Doctor and the Doctor said,
“No more monsters jumping on the bed!”

Three little monsters jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
The MOMster called the Doctor and the Doctor said,
“No more monsters jumping on the bed!”

TWO little monsters jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
The MOMster called the Doctor and the Doctor said,
“No more monsters jumping on the bed!”

ONE little monster jumping on the bed,
One fell off and bumped his head.
The MOMster called the Doctor and the Doctor said,
“SEND ALL THOSE MONSTERS BACK TO BED!”

Christian Songs For Toddlers and Preschoolers

We Don’t Have to Be Afraid

As I mentioned above, I have a favorite song that I learned years ago when my kids were little. I’m still singing it now, to my grandkids. It’s a Scripture song based on Joshua 1:9 from the New American Standard Bible copyright 1984 (that version is NOT easy to find but there is an IOS app that is currently $2.99 for the Bible, OR 2.99 for the audio, OR $3.99 for both and it has a good review. 🙂  I purchased just the Bible to read since I already have a couple of audio versions I love. It does have this verse correct, so I’m guessing it truly is the 1984 version.)

The song’s lyrics are straight from this version of the Bible:

Have I not commanded you be strong and courageous!

Repeat

Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God will be with you

Wherever you may go!

Joshua 1, verse 9

Where did I get the song? From the terrific series – GT and the Halo Express. Each of my kids still remembers at least one or two songs from that series. This song is MY favorite and YES, I have used it more than once in my mind during scary situations! 🙂  It’s on their cd titled, “Winning the Great Race of Faith.” Here’s an adorable video to give you a flavor of the song’s tune.

“God is bigger than the Boogieman” by Veggietales in their video “Where is God When I’m Scared is my second favorite song for combatting fear. It’s not a Bible verse but it’s definitely Scriptural and fun. And it’s a particular favorite of one of my older grandkids as I taught it to him when he was much younger. 🙂

Here’s a video with just the song:

I must say, we do have fun with it. I also love to adjust the words to match our needs. My most recent  example. This past week, after our mega storm, I adjusted it to sing:

“God is bigger than the Boogie Man, He’s bigger than Gourdzilla or the monsters on TV. God is bigger than the THUNDER CLAPS and He’s watching out for you and me.”

🙂

After all, in a child’s mind – thunder can be as big a monster as anything else 😉

Here’s a video with the whole episode. But watch it alone first to see if it’s something your little one will be comfortable watching. We definitely don’t want to scare them when we’re trying to help them NOT be scared. 🙂

Little Bear was engrossed by the video and it did NOT scare him. Yay.

More Fun UN-scary Activities for Little Kids

  1. 3d lion mask – we’re going to try this next year!
  2. Cool Daniel “act out” rhyme – definitely for older preschoolers from Danielle’s Place
  3. In fact, Danielle’s Place has several fun lion activities and rhymes , including in her free section. I really liked “Lions in the Den” by Nancy Foss (sung to the tune of “The Wheels on the Bus”), along with a reader’s version further down the page. Little Bear does enjoy fun rhymes – especially with activities. And making sure he gets lots of exercise when he’s with me is always a top priority – as he sleeps much better for naps and at night. Healthier that way too! 🙂

It was a lovely day together – full of songs, stories, projects, coloring pages, hugs and laughter. Definitely a monsterific yet UN-scary way to enjoy harvest and halloween fun.

Next week, we’re talking BATS! And wow! I learned a lot too!  Hope to see you then!
